The Walvis family at Walvis Bay is an inspiration to parents of children with Down syndrome. They have founded the Yahweh Down Syndrome Foundation in 2022, dedicated to their six-year-old son, Nehemiah, who has Down’s syndrome. The family’s journey in raising Nehemiah has led them to realize their dream of starting a pre-primary school for children with the same condition.
Bonita Antoncich, the matriarch of the family, shared that adopting Nehemia in 2017 was a blessing. Nehemia, who joined their family when he was just one day old, was diagnosed with Down’s syndrome and a chronic heart infection a year later. After a successful heart operation in 2019, the family had difficulty finding an appropriate school for their son. This led them to launch programs to assist parents facing similar challenges.
Bonita’s daughter, Janeley Antoncich, conducted extensive research on caring for children with special needs, drawing from her experience as an au pair. She noted the importance of providing stimulation and assistance to parents who may not know how to effectively support their children. The ultimate goal of the foundation is to integrate these children into mainstream schools, enabling them to lead normal lives.
The foundation received a 12-meter container last year, which they are converting into a child-friendly environment. They are also in need of an additional structure for a sleeping area, with six beds sponsored by Welwitschia hospital. Fundraising events will be organized to provide transportation for the children and sustain the school’s operations.
Janeley, supported by two other teachers, emphasized the importance of creating awareness around children with Down’s syndrome and their capabilities. The foundation has hosted fundraising events, including beauty pageants, to secure start-up funds. They plan to expand the school to accommodate up to 12 children, with some parents contributing financially.
Magrieta van Schalkwyk, a parent of a child at the school, expressed how Yahweh has positively impacted her daughter’s life. While the focus is on children with Down’s syndrome, the school is inclusive and open to all children. Two social workers from the town provide assistance to the school, further supporting the children’s development.
The Walvis family’s dedication and commitment to supporting children with Down syndrome have given hope to parents facing similar challenges. Through the Yahweh Down Syndrome Foundation, they aim to provide a nurturing and inclusive environment for children with special needs, promoting acceptance and integration within the community.
