The world gathered at Windhoek’s Independence Stadium on Saturday to honor and pay tribute to the late president Hage Geingob. Heads of state and government from over 15 countries praised Geingob for his mastery in politics, mobilization, education, and unity at his national memorial service.
The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology had announced that around 28 heads of state and government were expected to attend Geingob’s funeral and memorial. Leaders of international organizations also paid their respects to Geingob, with the European Union (EU) ambassador to Namibia, Ana Martins, expressing Europe’s deep sentiments towards his passing.
Martins highlighted Geingob’s role in fostering a stronger relationship between Namibia and Europe during his tenure. Patricia Scotland, the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, emphasized Geingob’s impact on the organization, praising his commitment to equality and justice.
Jiang Zuojun, the special envoy of President Xi Jinping, acknowledged Geingob’s leadership in promoting pan-Africanism and solidarity within Africa. He also highlighted the close relationship between Geingob and China, lauding him as a friend of the Chinese people.
Princess Anne of the British Royal Family and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, among other international guests, also attended the memorial to pay their respects. Former and current African leaders extended their condolences to Namibia, with Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema announcing the renaming of a road in Lusaka after Geingob.
Botswana’s President, Mokgweetsi Masisi, reminisced about his conversations with Geingob and praised the bilateral agreement between Botswana and Namibia, which allowed citizens to cross the border using their national identity cards. Kenyan President William Ruto highlighted Geingob’s vision for a liberated Africa and emphasized the need to continue working towards economic liberation and empowerment for the youth.
Other African heads of state, including Emmerson Mnangangwa of Zimbabwe, Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Angola’s João Lourenço, also eulogized Geingob at the memorial service. The outpouring of respect and admiration from leaders around the world showcased the impact and legacy of President Hage Geingob.
As the world mourns the loss of a visionary leader, Geingob’s contributions to politics, education, and unity will be remembered and honored by all those who were touched by his life and leadership. The legacy of President Hage Geingob will continue to inspire future generations and shape the relationships between nations.
