The Namibian Defence Force has announced the detailed information about the ceremonial processions for the funeral of the late president, Hage Geingob. The state funeral to honour the late president has been scheduled for 25 February 2024, with full military honours as ordered by the chief of the defence force following his untimely passing on 4 February 2024.
In preparation for the state funeral, approximately 2,000 Namibian Defence Force troops from the army, air force, and navy have been mobilised to execute the conduct of the state funeral. The participating troops will be organised into various groups including the guard of honour, silent guard, escort, route lining, pall-bearers, vigil guards, bearers, and chaplaincy.
The state funeral will be conducted in three stages, with the first stage being a ceremonial route procession and body lying in state at Parliament Gardens on 23 February 2024. The following day, a memorial service and body lying in state will take place at Independence Stadium. Finally, the burial ceremony is scheduled for 25 February 2024.
On 23 February, a ceremonial route procession will take place to honour the late president. The procession will start at State House and proceed through various streets, culminating in the body lying in state at Parliament Gardens to allow the general public to pay their last respects to the late president. The timings for the ceremonial route procession have been detailed for each section of the route.
Following the procession, the body will be ready for viewing at Parliament Gardens from 18:30, 23 February 2024, until 11:30, 24 February. On 24 February, a procession will move from Parliament Gardens to Independence Stadium for the memorial service. The procession route has been detailed for this move as well.
On 25 February, the procession will move from Independence Stadium to Heroes’ Acre for the burial. The route for this procession has also been detailed, and it is important to note that the aforementioned roads will be temporarily closed during the procession.
