Martin Gebhard, a 24-year-old man, is grappling with the aftermath of a traumatizing gas explosion that occurred at his workplace, resulting in severe burn injuries on his body. Adding to his distress, Gebhard claims that his employer abandoned him following the accident, leaving him to deal with the physical and emotional repercussions on his own.
The incident took place at a farm in Dordabis where Gebhard was employed, back in early November of the previous year. Recalling the horrifying experience, Gebhard describes how he was caught in the explosion while entering a tent where equipment, including petrol containers, was stored. Unfortunately, a pot cooking on the gas stove ignited the highly flammable gas, leading to a catastrophic explosion that engulfed Gebhard in flames, causing extensive burns from head to toe.
With no immediate access to water for firefighting, Gebhard was rushed to Katutura Intermediate Hospital in a private vehicle, enduring excruciating pain and discomfort during the transit. The severity of his injuries was evident, with his skin blistering and peeling off, leaving him in a state of agony and shock.
Despite the dire circumstances, Gebhard’s ordeal continued as he felt abandoned by his employer, Cobus Swart, who allegedly refused to provide any compensation or support for his medical treatment. Swart, on the other hand, denied responsibility, claiming that the accident occurred after working hours and attributing the cause to Gebhard’s own negligence with a petrol container.
Gebhard’s physical condition deteriorated over the subsequent months, rendering him unable to work due to deformities in his hands and body. His sister, Helena Amagulu, stepped in to care for him, witnessing the harrowing effects of the accident and the emotional toll it took on her brother.
Despite the challenges he faced, Gebhard remained hopeful for justice and fair treatment from his employer. He emphasized the need for compensation to cover his medical expenses and the loss of livelihood caused by the life-altering injuries he sustained.
The plight of Martin Gebhard sheds light on the vulnerable position of workers who suffer workplace injuries and the importance of employer accountability and support in such situations. As he continues to navigate the physical and emotional scars of the gas explosion, Gebhard’s story serves as a reminder of the long-lasting impact that workplace accidents can have on individuals and their families.
