United People’s Movement (UPM) vice president and member of parliament (MP) Jan van Wyk recently announced that his party is supporting independent candidate Ally Angula in the upcoming elections. According to Van Wyk, Angula was instructed by God to run for the presidency, which is one of the reasons why the UPM decided to back her candidacy.

Van Wyk emphasized that Angula’s decision to enter the race was not driven by personal ambition, but rather by a divine calling. He expressed confidence in Angula’s capabilities, citing her youth as an advantage in bringing new perspectives and energy to the political landscape. However, he acknowledged the need to convince the electorate to support her in order to realize her vision for the country.

The UPM’s decision to support Angula marks a shift from their previous alliance with the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) in the 2019 elections. Van Wyk explained that the alliance was intended for the 2019 elections only, and the UPM central committee decided to go solo in the upcoming elections in order to re-establish the UPM brand.

Despite the end of their alliance with the PDM, Van Wyk stressed that there is no animosity between the two parties, and they continue to work together in parliament. He also refuted claims that the UPM is a tribal party, highlighting the diversity of its membership.

The UPM, along with civic organizations KG Namibia, Youth Power, and National Empowerment Fighting Corruption (NEFC) party, recently formed an alliance in support of Angula’s candidacy. This alliance was signed by Van Wyk and NEFC president Kenneth Iilonga, indicating a united front in backing Angula for the upcoming elections.

While the PDM acknowledged the UPM’s decision to form a new alliance, they stated that their previous alliance was only until 2025. Political commentator Ndumba Kamwanyah expressed skepticism about the impact of the UPM and NEFC’s support for Angula, noting the limited voter base of these smaller parties.

Despite the challenges, Angula remains confident about her chances in the presidential election. She attributed her decision to run to a divine calling, stating that she has received clear signs from God to pursue the presidency. Angula expressed faith in God’s guidance and believed that her candidacy was part of a larger plan set by a higher power.

In conclusion, the UPM’s decision to support Ally Angula, based on her divine calling to run for the presidency, reflects a strategic shift in their political alliances. While there may be skepticism about the impact of this support, Angula remains confident in her abilities and her faith in God’s plan for her candidacy. The upcoming elections will ultimately determine the success of this alliance and Angula’s bid for the presidency.
