James Mbauni, a matatu driver, is facing rape charges at the Makadara Law Courts after allegedly attempting to rob and rape a woman in a bush in Kasarani, Nairobi. The incident took place on January 21 at Miaro Farm in Kasarani, where Mbauni is accused of raping the victim, identified as MM, and committing an indecent act with an adult.

The police officers who rescued MM were alerted by a boda boda rider who noticed a suspicious matatu driven into a nearby bush. Upon investigation, the officers found Mbauni and MM fighting in the bush and intervened. Mbauni attempted to flee in the matatu but was intercepted and apprehended by the police.

According to court documents, MM was traveling to Kiambu County when Mbauni offered to drop her off at the right stage but instead diverted from the main road to an unknown destination. He then stopped the vehicle, threatened her with a pair of scissors, and proceeded to rape her. However, MM managed to free herself and tried to escape, leading to a struggle in which Mbauni allegedly attempted to extort money from her.

Following the commotion, the police arrived at the scene, arrested Mbauni, and took both him and MM to the Njathaini police station. MM received medical assistance as a survivor of gender-based violence and later recorded her statement about the incident.

Mbauni denied the charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Justus Kituku and was released on a bond of Sh300,000 with an alternative cash bail of Sh200,000. The case is scheduled to be mentioned on March 20 with the hearing set for June 17.
