Relegation-threatened Gombe United faced further setbacks as the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) announced sanctions against them for their assault on match officials. The club was docked three points and three goals from its season tally, with NPFL Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi, cautioning other clubs about the safety of match officials in their games.

The punishment came after officials were physically attacked by fans during the Matchday 26 fixture against Akwa United at the Pantanmi Stadium on Sunday, March 17. The NPFL’s summary jurisdiction notice revealed that the Centre Referee, AR1, AR2, and fourth official were assaulted by Gombe United fans. The club was charged with breaches of NPFL regulations related to security, throwing objects, and assault on match officials.

In addition to the points deduction, Gombe United was fined N3 million, including penalties for failing to provide adequate security, fans throwing objects onto the field, and compensatory payments to the match officials. The club was also ordered to play their next three home games behind closed doors at the Pantami Stadium.

Gombe United had 48 hours to accept the sanctions or choose to face a disciplinary panel according to NPFL rules. Owumi’s warning to clubs underscored the importance of ensuring the safety of match officials in all NPFL fixtures to avoid similar consequences.

The incident served as a reminder of the need for strict security measures and respectful behavior towards match officials in Nigerian football. The NPFL’s swift action to penalize Gombe United sent a strong message to all clubs about the consequences of failing to uphold standards of conduct during matches. By imposing sanctions and fines, the league authorities aimed to deter future incidents of violence and misconduct.

Ultimately, Gombe United’s actions not only harmed their own reputation but also reflected poorly on the Nigerian football community as a whole. The NPFL’s decision to discipline the club highlighted the league’s commitment to upholding integrity and fair play in all competitions. Going forward, clubs must prioritize the safety and well-being of match officials to maintain the credibility and professionalism of Nigerian football.
