Buganda Premier (Katikkiro) Charles Peter Mayiga has emphasized the importance of agriculture and innovation for Muteesa 1 Royal University as the institution celebrates receiving a charter from the government. The Masaka-based university, founded in 2007, was granted a charter by President Museveni, signifying recognition by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE).

A charter is a significant milestone for a university as it indicates that the institution meets the requirements and standards of academic excellence set by the NCHE, as outlined in the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act. With this charter, Muteesa 1 Royal University is now officially recognized as a higher education institution in Uganda.

In light of this achievement, Katikkiro Mayiga stressed the importance of specialization for the university. He expressed the need for Muteesa 1 Royal University to focus on agriculture and innovation in order to distinguish itself in its areas of expertise. Mayiga highlighted the importance of producing experts in agriculture and innovation, aligning with Buganda Kingdom’s promotion of these sectors. With 70% of the population engaged in farming, there is a clear demand for skilled professionals in agriculture to contribute to the development of the country.

Established in 2007 by Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, Muteesa 1 Royal University was created to support the education sector in the Buganda region and Uganda as a whole. The university has two branches, one in Kirumba Masaka and the other in Kakeeka, Rubaga Division in Kampala, catering to students across different locations.

Following the granting of the charter, University Vice Chancellor Prof Vincent Kakembo acknowledged the challenges faced in meeting the requirements for charter status. The university had to consult experts and secure financial support to fulfill the necessary criteria. Despite these obstacles, Kakembo praised the quick approval of the charter by the President and expressed gratitude for his support in the process.

Muteesa 1 Royal University now joins a select group of over 20 private universities in Uganda that have achieved charter status. This recognition solidifies the institution’s commitment to academic excellence and positions it as a reputable higher education institution in the country.

In conclusion, the charter awarded to Muteesa 1 Royal University marks a significant achievement for the institution and underscores the importance of specialization in agriculture and innovation. With a focus on producing experts in these fields, the university is poised to make a meaningful contribution to the development of the Buganda region and Uganda as a whole.
