Muslim leaders have officially announced the celebration of Eid-al Fitr on Wednesday, marking the end of the fasting month of Ramadhan. This decision was made after the failure to sight the new crescent moon on Monday evening, as recommended in Islamic teachings.
Dr. Sheikh Ziyad Swaleh Lubanga, the director of sharia at Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC), confirmed that national prayers at Gaddafi Mosque will commence at 8am and will be led by Sheikh Ramadhan Mubajje, the mufti of Uganda. He stated, “I would like to inform the Muslim fraternity and the wider public in Uganda that the new moon has not been sighted this evening. Therefore, Eid-al-Fitir will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 10, 2024.”
At Old Kampala, prayers will be led by Mufti Shaban Mubajje starting at 10am. At Kibuli Mosque, prayers will be led by Dr. Hafith Walusimbi, the director of Sharia under the Kibuli parallel Muslim administration, starting at 9am. Dr. Lubanga urged believers to pray for peace and harmony in countries such as Sudan, Ukraine, and Palestine, where there is ongoing conflict. He expressed concern for those unable to celebrate due to the circumstances and called for prayers for peace worldwide.
The Eid festivities traditionally begin after the sighting of the new crescent moon, marking the first day of Shawwal, the month following Ramadhan in the Islamic calendar. It is a time to give to those in need, coming together with family and friends to celebrate the completion of a month of blessings and joy.
Additionally, Eid marks the start of preparations for the Hajj pilgrimage, which concludes with Eid al-Adha approximately 70 days after Eid al-Fitr. This period of reflection and spiritual significance is an essential part of the Muslim calendar.
As Muslims around the world prepare to celebrate Eid-al Fitr, the message of peace and unity is emphasized, particularly in light of the conflicts affecting various regions. The importance of coming together in prayer and reflection to promote harmony and understanding is crucial during this time of celebration.
