President Museveni congratulated the people of Luweero on the successful consecration of the 4th bishop of the Anglican diocese, emphasizing the importance of fighting poverty through Church ministry. The newly consecrated Bishop Wilson Kisekka takes over from Bishop Eridard Nsubuga Kironde, who retired after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 65 in July 2023.
During the consecration service, President Museveni’s message was delivered by the Minister of Works and Transport, Gen Edward Katumba Wamala. He reiterated his previous messages to religious leaders, urging them to help transform the lives of the faithful through comprehensive and relevant spiritual guidance. He commended Caretaker Bishop James Ssebagala for taking on the role during the interim period and encouraged a holistic approach to Church ministry that addresses not only spiritual needs but also practical concerns.
President Museveni highlighted the challenge of poverty in the region, with around 38% of the population still engaged in subsistence farming practices leading to persistent poverty. He stressed the importance of generating income to meet basic life needs and called on Church leaders to play a vital role in addressing this issue. President Museveni pledged financial support of Shs50m for the new bishop and the Diocese, urging the people of Luweero to work together with the bishop to overcome poverty and serve God joyfully.
Archbishop Samuel Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, who led the consecration service, emphasized the need for unity and continued development in Luweero. He encouraged the community to support the new bishop and engage in productive activities to drive progress and growth in the region. The Archbishop called for unity and an end to division, urging the people to embrace positive initiatives and work together for the common good.
In his address, Bishop Kisekka outlined his priorities, including dedicating his efforts to peace-building and fostering harmony among the faithful. He emphasized the importance of environmental conservation, ensuring the welfare of Church ministers, and promoting education in church-founded schools. Bishop Kisekka expressed his commitment to utilizing available land for the benefit of the community and to safeguard it from exploitation. He also highlighted the importance of strengthening education in church schools to empower future generations.
The consecration of Bishop Wilson Kisekka marks a new chapter in the Anglican diocese of Luweero, with a renewed focus on addressing poverty, promoting unity, and fostering spiritual and material well-being among the faithful. The commitment of religious and community leaders to these goals signals a positive step towards holistic development and progress in the region.
