Dominic Nwuzoru, the manager of the late Nollywood comic actor, John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, shared insights into the widespread popularity and impact that the late comedian had across various African countries. Nwuzoru revealed that Mr Ibu was not only celebrated in Nigeria but also in countries like Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Gambia, Gabon, and Botswana during his lifetime.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Nwuzoru highlighted how Mr Ibu used his humor to promote peace and unity across Africa. He recounted instances where the late veteran comedian was honored and recognized by leaders and communities across the continent. Nwuzoru recalled a specific incident in Ghana where two warring tribes came together for the first time after Mr Ibu’s performance, leading to their reconciliation. As a result, Mr Ibu was bestowed with a Chieftaincy title as the ‘Malangula I of Tamale Land’ for his role as a peacemaker.

During a visit to Botswana, Mr Ibu proudly displayed the Nigerian flag upon landing, showcasing his patriotism and love for his country. Nwuzoru emphasized that Mr Ibu was not just an actor but a Nollywood ambassador who used his talent and humor to promote peace, happiness, and unity among Africans. Their relationship evolved from a business partnership to a deep friendship since Nwuzoru signed Mr Ibu in 2004.

The late thespian’s popularity extended beyond Nigerian borders, with fans gathering in crowds at airports across Africa to welcome him. Nwuzoru highlighted how Mr Ibu was revered as a people’s leader across Africa and had a significant impact on projecting Nigeria positively to the world. Despite negative stories about Nigeria, Mr Ibu’s charm and originality endeared him to foreigners, inspiring them to visit Nigeria and learn more about the country.

Mr Ibu, born on October 17, 1961, in Enugu State, was renowned for his ‘Mr Ibu series,’ which included films like Mr. Ibu (2004), Mr. Ibu 2 (2005), Mr. Ibu and His Son, Coffin Producers, Husband Suppliers, International Players, and Mr. Ibu in London (2005). His recent passing in Lagos marked the end of an era for the entertainment industry, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and positive impact that resonated not only in Nigeria but across the African continent.
