Mathias Mpuuga, the Nyendo-Mukungwe MP and former deputy president of the National Unity Platform (NUP) for the Buganda region, has been suspended from his position. In response, Mpuuga stated that he would consult with members of the party to determine the way forward. In a letter addressed to party president Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, Mpuuga expressed his understanding of the challenging situation Kyagulanyi is facing and offered his support.

Mpuuga expressed surprise at the accusations leveled against him regarding a financial matter, especially since he had reportedly confessed and apologized to the party leadership. He emphasized the need for consultation within the party to address the current crisis and find a way forward. Despite the suspension, Mpuuga reiterated his commitment to serving both the party and the country.

The suspension came shortly after Buganda Kingdom called for peace talks between Mpuuga and Kyagulanyi. However, instead of pursuing mediation, Kyagulanyi opted to suspend Mpuuga for allegedly violating the Leadership Code Act. The decision to suspend Mpuuga was made following several unsuccessful party meetings and discussions regarding his alleged misconduct.

The party accused Mpuuga of engaging in corruption related to accepting a significant sum of money during his tenure as Leader of Opposition in Parliament. The party constitution mandates members to uphold ethical conduct and leadership practices, which the party claims Mpuuga violated. Despite directives to return the money and offer a public apology, Mpuuga has remained defiant, further straining the relationship between him and the party leadership.

Mpuuga’s suspension from the parliamentary commission and his refusal to comply with the party’s directives have led to a tense standoff between him and the party. Speaker of Parliament Anita Among’s rejection of the party’s request to replace Mpuuga as commissioner has further complicated the situation. Despite facing mounting pressure, Mpuuga has vowed to remain loyal to NUP and initiate internal reforms to strengthen the party’s credibility.

As the situation unfolds, Mpuuga’s suspension highlights the internal conflicts and challenges facing NUP. The party’s efforts to address allegations of misconduct and corruption within its ranks underscore the importance of transparency and accountability in political leadership. Moving forward, consultations and dialogue within the party will be crucial to resolving the current crisis and rebuilding trust among members.
