The Kagoma North Member of Parliament (MP), Mr Alex Brandon Kintu, has found himself embroiled in a controversy after being accused of disappearing with Shs95m that was raised for the construction of a health center in his constituency. The fundraising drive was initiated by Mr Kintu and took place at a function attended by the Prime Minister Ms Robinah Nabanja, where Shs95m was collected to kickstart the construction of Nakajjo health centre III in Buyengo town council. Reports indicate that Jinja Woman MP, Ms Loy Katali, was instrumental in pushing for the fundraising efforts, and construction at the site began but was later halted due to a lack of funds.
Mr Kintu was later accused by Ms Katali’s Political Assistant, Mr Ali Kirume, of disappearing with the funds, leaving the construction works in limbo. Mr Kirume expressed the public’s concern and urged Mr Kintu to return the money that was raised for the health center project. However, Mr Kintu defended himself, stating that the funds were spent accordingly and denying any embezzlement. He claimed that the money was put to its intended use and accused his critics of attempting to tarnish his reputation. Mr Kintu also mentioned that the funds raised were insufficient for the project’s completion and that he is exploring other avenues to secure additional funding.
In response to the accusations and growing tension between Mr Kintu and his political colleagues, the Bishop of Busoga Diocese, Rt Rev Paul Naimanhye, advised Mr Kintu to seek reconciliation with his detractors. Rt Rev Naimanhye warned that if the conflict persisted, it could escalate to involve the First Deputy Prime Minister, Ms Rebecca Kadaga, for mediation.
The situation surrounding the missing funds and the halted construction of the health center has sparked concern among residents of Nakajjo village in Buyengo town council, Jinja District. A sense of unease and frustration is palpable among the community members as they await resolution to the issue. The uncertainty surrounding the completion of the health center has left many individuals wondering about the future of their healthcare access and the impact of the alleged misappropriation of funds by their elected representative.
As the controversy continues to unfold, it is evident that accountability and transparency in governance are critical for earning and maintaining the trust of the electorate. The allegations against Mr Kintu highlight the importance of proper financial management and oversight in public projects and fundraising initiatives. Residents, leaders, and stakeholders alike are eager for a resolution to the situation and hope for a swift and fair investigation into the allegations of missing funds.
