Morocco: Two Moroccan films in the running for the “Ousmane Sembène” prize – Africa Links 24

13 feature films and 14 short films will be competing at the 24th edition of the Khouribga African Film Festival (FICAK), which will take place from May 11 to 18 under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. Here are the details!

The list of films participating in the official competition of the 24th edition of the Khouribga African Film Festival (FICAK), scheduled from May 11 to 18, has just been revealed. According to the foundation of this festival, thirteen feature films representing 13 countries will be competing for the prize in the official competition. These include “Toi Jeddi” by Sara Ben-Saud, “L’Argile” by Arcade Assogba, “Backstage” by Afef Ben Mahmoud and Khalil Benkirane, “Champ des Oubliés” by Roger Gbékou. The list also includes “Le silence des violons” by Saâd Chraibi, “Le verre de l’Amitié” by Naoufel Berraoui, “La mariée” by Myriam Birara, among others. The festival foundation has unveiled the short films competing for the prizes in the official competition.

According to the organizers, there are 14 films. These include “A lamb, a Sheep and Raven” by Moroccan director Amen Hammou, “La Quarantaine” by Sana Jazuri, “The Domesticated” by Hamd Wahba, “Cameraphobia” by Younes. H. Khami.Y, “Lobi Ekosimba” by Kumbuka Maene, “Une autre Blanche” by Medessé Agohoundjé, “L’assaut des Vagues” by Mathias Noussougnon, “Wolowunla” by Fousseni Maiga, and “Le Silence de Larmes” by Jean Marie.G. Also competing in this competition are “A Wingless bird The flies” by Remy Ryumugabe (Rwanda), “Arodan” by Sanni Ayodeji, “Elisa” by Saura. F. Leane, “Le Cri /Kuleken” by Dramane Traoré, and “Baccou” by Stéphane Boye.

Malian cinema honored guest
According to the organizers, Malian cinema is the honored guest of this 24th edition of the FICAK, which will feature the screening of six films by Malian filmmakers in the presence of directors, writers, artists, and novelists from the country. The jury for the official short film competition will be chaired by Tunisian writer and film critic Sonia Chamkhi alongside Moroccan film critic Bouchta Farqzaid and Yacouba H Beidari from Niger. The FICAK, celebrating its 47th year this year, will maintain the African film critics’ Prize as well as the “Don Quixote” Prize awarded by the National Federation of cinema Clubs in Morocco.

During this new edition, the FICAK will pay tribute to figures of African and national cinema in recognition of their long and brilliant careers and their rich contribution to the promotion of cinema in the African continent. There will also be screenings of educational films for students in the region in collaboration with the Regional Academy of Education and Training of Beni Mellal-Khenifra, as well as the organization of a screenplay competition, for the first time in the history of the Festival, involving screenwriters.

As part of its openness to its environment, the FICAK will open the doors of the local prison in Khouribga for a new edition of the “Cultural Festival of African Prisoners in Khouribga”, a highlight of this continental event dedicated to the 7th art. The program of this event also includes a conference on cinema as well as the midnight debates of the FICAK, a recognized tradition at the festival aimed at bringing cinema closer to film lovers. The FICAK, whose first edition dates back to 1977, is considered one of the oldest film festivals in Morocco and the third African film festival on the continent.
