The 38th edition of the Marathon des Sables (MDS) will take place from April 12 to 22 in the Moroccan Sahara, under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
Participants will have to cover 252 km over 6 stages, the longest timed distance ever offered in the history of the MDS, according to a statement from the organizers. Nearly 900 athletes from 58 countries are expected at this edition to “experience a human and sporting adventure that will push them to explore their limits,” the same source continues. “This edition promises to be both challenging and very enjoyable for all participants. Among them, we will find the elite athletes the El Morabity brothers with Rachid and Mohammed, Ahmed Oukhalfen forming Team TGCC, Aziza El Amrany the revelation of the 2023 edition, the Yachou brothers on the lookout, Aziza Raji for Team SOFAC, the Amaoui and Mohamed Rahmoun brothers for Volkswagen Morocco, as well as French trail runner Yoann Stuck,” the document adds.
The MDS is a foot race, open to walkers, in 6 stages, in food self-sufficiency and at free pace over a distance of 252 kilometers, with the obligation for the competitor to carry their equipment (food and mandatory gear). This multi-stage competition tests not only physical but also mental resilience, standing out for its extreme difficulty. The 2024 edition of the Marathon des Sables is shaping up to be particularly remarkable, introducing innovations in terms of self-sufficiency and sustainable innovations, while also being the longest in its history, the statement concludes.
