The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced on Sunday “provocations” by Morocco in the context of a “spoliation operation” of its embassy property in Rabat, following reports in the press. “It’s unfounded, it contains many false allegations, and it shows an unjustified escalation,” a Moroccan diplomatic source told AFP.

According to this source, the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as part of an expansion project, acquired a vacant property adjacent to the embassy offices from Algeria in 2022, after the embassy was relocated. “This is not a matter that Morocco dealt with secretly, but rather with full transparency and in direct communication with the Algerian authorities, who responded,” the source told AFP, adding that the process is currently at a standstill because Morocco is not seeking escalation.

The Moroccan Ministry has also undertaken similar steps with other foreign representations in the area to expand its facilities, the source clarified.

Algiers cut diplomatic ties with Rabat in August 2021, citing a series of “hostile acts” by its neighbor, particularly concerning Western Sahara and normalization with Israel. Rabat deemed this decision “completely unjustified.”
