The overall external position, which reflects the asset situation of the Moroccan economy vis-à-vis the rest of the world, shows a net debtor position of 791.6 billion dirhams (MMDH) in 2023, according to the Office of Exchange.

This situation results from the increase in financial assets of 7 MMDH, which is higher than the increase in financial liabilities (1.3 MMDH), explains the Office in a statement on the results of external trade for the year 2023.

According to the same source, the increase in financial assets is mainly due to the significant increase of 4.2 MMDH in the reserve assets.

Furthermore, the Office of Exchange indicates that the slight increase in financial liabilities is explained by the increase in the level of direct investments (2.9 MMDH) and that related to the “other investments” component (1.3 MMDH), however, offset by the decrease in the level of portfolio investments (-2.9 MMDH).
