The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) has announced the launch of a series of workshops aimed at developing its strategy to combat the illicit trafficking of cultural goods in the Islamic world, with the participation of heritage experts from 12 countries.

According to a statement from ICESCO, the aim of these workshops, the first of which was held on Thursday at the organization’s headquarters in Rabat, is to examine practical mechanisms for implementing this strategy, supporting cultural policies and legal systems in member states, and introducing international conventions and national legislation in this area.

At the end of the first workshop, held via video conference on the theme “Combatting Illicit Trafficking of Cultural Goods,” several recommendations were made, the statement notes. These include the creation of a committee composed of ICESCO member states specializing in requests for the return of looted cultural goods, the establishment of an observatory to monitor global auctions, strengthening international cooperation to recover stolen artifacts, the need for states to adhere to international agreements on combating illicit trafficking of cultural goods, and the importance of ICESCO coordination among countries in this area.
