The Competition Council announced on Tuesday that all economic operators involved in the practice of charging service fees to customers for paying bills electronically have stopped these charges. “In the context of monitoring the evolution of practices regarding charging fees for electronic bill payments, the Competition Council is pleased to announce that all economic operators involved in billing service fees to customers have ceased these charges,” said a statement from the Council.

In this regard, the same source recalls that efforts undertaken by the Competition Council, in close coordination with all relevant partners, have led, in a first step, to putting an end to this practice by companies operating in the telecommunications sector, private educational institutions, delegated management companies, water and electricity distribution authorities, as well as the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE).

Furthermore, other government services that had committed to ending this practice have actually abandoned it as of the beginning of 2024, namely the General Directorate of Taxes (DGI) and the National Social Security Fund (CNSS), thus showing the commitment of all actors involved in this practice to this action, the statement says. And to conclude: “Thus, the Council congratulates all the actors involved, their strong involvement has allowed for a definitive solution to this practice that harms consumers’ interests and hinders the development of our economy’s digitalization in a concerted and constructive framework.”
