The world number 1 Novak Djokovic has pulled out of the Miami Masters 1000 (March 20-31) on Saturday, just a few days after his surprising elimination in the 3rd round of the Indian Wells tournament. “Unfortunately, I will not be playing the Miami tournament this year,” the 36-year-old Serbian wrote on social media. “At this stage of my career, I need to find a balance between my private life and my professional schedule.”

On Monday, “Djoko” was eliminated in the 3rd round of another American Masters 1000, the Indian Wells tournament, by the 123rd-ranked player in the world, 20-year-old Italian Luca Nardi. The winner of 24 Grand Slam titles was making his return to the California circuit after his defeat in the semi-finals of the Australian Open in January. “I have been in a negative cycle for three or four tournaments,” he explained after his defeat. “I am playing fewer tournaments, being more selective, so it doesn’t feel good to lose so early. I have not won a title this year yet, I am not used to it, but that’s how it is.”

Djokovic has not indicated where he will play next, as the clay court season approaches, with the Monte-Carlo tournament from April 7 to 14.
