This project, with a total investment of over 12 million Moroccan Dirhams, aims to contribute to the animation of the “blue pearl” through an event calendar and meetings with creators and their audience, while promoting artistic and cultural creativity at the local, regional, and national levels.

The cultural landscape of Chefchaouen is set to be enriched by the creation of a theater, much to the delight of creators and enthusiasts of the arts and entertainment. Highly anticipated, this project dedicated to theatrical performances and other cultural and artistic activities requires, according to initial estimates, a total budget of over 12 million Dirhams. It is the result of a specific partnership agreement between the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication and the Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceima Regional Council, the municipality of Chefchaouen, and the regional directorate of culture, whose provisions were recently approved during the regular session of the Regional Council held in March. “This agreement aims to define the conditions for the construction and management of the municipal theater of the city of Chefchaouen.”

A response to the call of civil society
This project responds to the expectations of creators, intellectuals, representatives of civil society, and ordinary people of Chefchaouen who have often called during events or on social media for the need to provide the city with a theater. Especially since, like Tangier and Tétouan, the main cities in the north, the blue pearl has seen the creation of theater companies over decades that have been awarded at major events and have contributed to the development of this art at the national level. According to the information provided during this regular session, the signatory parties and their main partners are committed to working together to achieve the future theater structure, in accordance with the government’s cultural development strategy. The Ministry of Culture contributes 9 million Dirhams to the construction of this first theater in the city. The Regional Council participates with 3 million Dirhams in financing this project. As for the municipality of Chefchaouen, it will invest 500 thousand Dirhams. It also commits to allocating the land for the construction of the future theater. The municipality of Chefchaouen is responsible, after the completion of the work and the delivery of this project, for the management and animation of this cultural structure.

City Animation
Like other cultural structures, the future theater aims to contribute primarily to the animation of the blue pearl. It will thus present various cultural and artistic productions to the inhabitants of Chefchaouen and the city’s visitors, while promoting artistic and cultural creativity at the local, regional, and national levels. Through its event calendar, workshops, and other activities, the future theater aims to create a space for exchange and communication between artists and creators and their audience. It is also intended to encourage the initiatives of cultural associations as well as those of young talents and institutions of cultural interest, while contributing to enriching the local, regional, and national cultural landscape.
