Arsenal and FC Barcelona qualified on Tuesday for the quarter-finals of the Champions League after years of absence.

The English club Arsenal qualified for the Champions League quarter-finals by beating Porto in a penalty shoot-out at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday. The Gunners are back in this stage of the competition 14 years after their last appearance, also at the expense of the Portuguese club. Trailing from the first leg (1-0), the English league leaders equalized just before halftime with a goal from Leandro Trossard (41st minute), before the two teams were separated in the penalty shoot-out. As for FC Barcelona, they qualified for the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 2020, after a 3-1 home victory against Napoli. This crucial success is important both on a sporting and economic level for the five-time European champions, who are behind in the race for the league title in La Liga (3rd, 8 points behind Real Madrid in 1st place) and were counting on this match to revive their season. In the first leg, the two teams drew 1-1.

This victory also allows the Blaugrana club to stay in the race for a spot in the new format of the Club World Cup, which will come into effect next year.

It is worth noting that the draw for the quarter-finals is scheduled for Friday.
