The British Andy Murray will be out for a “prolonged period” after sustaining a serious ankle injury during his third-round defeat at the Miami Open on Sunday.

Murray left the court towards the end of the match, after being defeated by Czech player Tomas Machac 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (7/5).

Although he continued to play, the Scottish player, currently ranked 62nd in the world, said on Monday that he had suffered a complete rupture of the anterior talofibular ligament and an almost complete rupture of the calcaneofibular ligament.

Having been plagued by numerous injuries since 2017, Murray, who will turn 37 in May, has already indicated that he will retire this season. If he recovers, it is likely that the gold medalist in singles at London 2012 and Rio 2016 will participate in the Paris Olympics just after Wimbledon, a tournament he has won twice, before ending a professional career that began in 2005.
