The prefecture of Fes, the second hub for the production and marketing of handicraft products, has nearly 7,000 artisans, representing 64% of the total number of artisans in the Fes-Meknes region. The sector generates a turnover of 7 billion dirhams in the prefecture of Fes, accounting for 70% of the craft sector turnover in the region, according to the Regional Investment Center (CRI).

This amount represents 9.1% of the sector’s turnover at the national level and 6.9% of the employment rate. The handicraft activity in Fes is characterized by the predominance of three specific trades: clothing, leather goods, and traditional building, employing 65.6% of the total workforce in the art and production craft sector. These trades generate 63.8% of the total turnover in the art and production craft sector in Fes.

The artisans in Fes are active in 177 cooperatives spread throughout the prefecture of Fes. There are 92 craft labels at the provincial level, accounting for 57% of the total national labels, according to sector indicators for 2023. With a contribution of 12.8% to the national GDP of the sector, handicrafts are the second flagship sector in the Fes-Meknes region, with over 40,000 handicraft production units representing 123,000 jobs in nearly 205 trades.

Fes-Meknes ranks 3rd in exports at the national level, owing to its historical expertise that helps it shine as a hub of artistic influence.
