The government provides an update on the reconstruction program after the September 8 earthquake.
Indeed, the Head of Government, Mr. Aziz Akhannouch, presided over the 9th meeting of the interministerial commission responsible for the general reconstruction and rehabilitation program of the areas affected by the Al-Haouz earthquake on Friday, March 15, 2024 in Rabat. The meeting examined the progress in implementing the program in accordance with the High Directives of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
During the meeting, the Head of Government stated that all relevant government departments have mobilized behind His Majesty the King, may God assist him, and have made considerable efforts to overcome the consequences of the earthquake, proceed with the necessary seriousness and diligence in reconstruction, and contribute to initiating a dynamic of economic, social, and cultural development in the affected areas.
Regarding financial assistance for the reconstruction and upgrading of homes that were totally or partially destroyed during the earthquake, as of March 13, a total of 51,300 families have received a first installment of 20,000 dirhams each, amounting to over 1 billion dirhams. The commission also approved the start of the disbursement of the second installment of direct aid for home reconstruction (40,000 dh) and upgrading (20,000 dh).
Local authorities and relevant commissions continue their efforts to provide rigorous support to the population whose homes were damaged.
Furthermore, 42,047 permits have been granted for reconstruction works, and 8,694 damaged homes are currently being reconstructed and upgraded. The Commission also highlighted the progress made on site clearance, which has been completed for 15,232 homes.
It is worth noting that the necessary studies for the restoration of several historical archaeological sites damaged by the earthquake have been completed. These sites include the Saadian tombs, the El Badii palace, the Bahia palace, the Ait Ben Haddou kasbah, and the Taourirt Ksar.
In the agricultural sector, the commission reviewed the progress of the distribution of 300,000 quintals of barley, benefiting 41,387 farmers in the affected areas. Additionally, the free distribution of livestock to affected breeders, launched in January, continues with the aim of distributing 70,000 heads of cattle.
In the education sector, the commission discussed the upcoming demolition and clearance operation for 236 schools, after the completion of technical studies and specifications, in order to rebuild these schools and reopen them to students in these regions.
In the health sector, the commission reviewed the progress of upgrading 42 priority health centers, where work began in January.
