The Uganda National Examinations Board (Uneb) recently announced the results of the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Examinations (UACE) for the year 2023, revealing that at least 73 percent of the students who took the exams are eligible for university admission. This marks a significant improvement in performance compared to the previous years of 2022 and 2021. The examinations took place from November 13 to December 1, 2023, with a total of 110,553 candidates registered across 2,102 examination centers throughout the country, showing an increase of 12,663 candidates from the previous year.
Uneb’s Executive Secretary, Dan Odongo, highlighted that 99.1% of the candidates qualified for the UACE award, consistent with the results from 2022. Out of the total candidates, 80,643 met the minimum requirement of obtaining 2 principal level passes for university admission, a notable increase from the 67,815 candidates in the 2022 examinations. Additionally, 90.7% of the candidates qualified with one principal and two subsidiary passes for admission to other tertiary institutions, showing an improvement from the previous year’s 89.3%.
The overall performance of the UACE in 2023 was compared to that of 2022, indicating a positive trend. Uneb reported that there was an improvement in the quality of candidates’ work, with higher mean scores in several subject areas. However, core science subjects, particularly Biology, continued to show lower-than-desired performance levels, mainly due to theoretical teaching methods and a lack of practical skills among candidates.
Uneb emphasized the need for urgent attention to subjects related to ICT, as many schools lack the necessary equipment like computers and printers for practical examinations, impacting the students’ ability to acquire skills and present quality work during the exams. The board called for improvements in teaching methods to enhance practical skills and performance in these subjects.
In terms of gender performance, Uneb’s analysis revealed that both male and female candidates showed improvement in their UACE results compared to the previous year. There was a general upward trend in performance across various subjects, indicating positive growth and potential for further academic achievements.
Overall, the release of the UACE results for 2023 showcases a positive trend in student performance and eligibility for higher education opportunities. Uneb’s recommendations for enhancing teaching methods, practical skills, and access to necessary resources reflect a commitment to improving the quality of education and preparing students for success in their academic pursuits.
