http://Actuguinee.org / A delegation from the Union of Media Professionals in Guinea was received on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, by the new Minister of Communication, Fana Soumah. The objective was to expose the difficulties faced by Guinean media in recent months, particularly the jamming of airwaves which has led to the loss of hundreds of jobs.
The Secretary General of the Union of Media Professionals in Guinea stated that he highlighted the problems that Guinean media have been facing for months.
“We informed him that currently, we have over 500 employees in Conakry and across the country who have lost their jobs (technicians, journalists…), and have been asked to stay at home because the media is jammed, TV channels are being removed from packages (Canal+ and Startimes). These media outlets will no longer be able to pay all salaries. As a result, staff has been reduced in many places,” he recalled.
We asked him to work towards freeing up the media airwaves. To end the jamming and bring back the channels that were dropped from TV packages.
At the same time, Sekou Jamal Pendessa asked the Minister of Communication to use his connections to secure the release of the airwaves.
“We asked him to work towards freeing up the media airwaves. To end the jamming and bring back the channels that were dropped from TV packages. Because, when these media outlets operate normally, we have the chance to resume our activities. Those who are unemployed have the chance to return to work. Fana Soumah is well acquainted with this environment. He is not a stranger, he is a journalist. And fortunately, he has very good relationships with various media players. This is an advantage for us journalists, but also for the authorities to resolve this crisis (…) We hope that his arrival will put an end to this crisis,” he hoped.
The Minister of Communication placed particular emphasis on the professionalism of Guinean journalists, according to Sekou Jamal Pendessa.
“He listened. He promised to do his best to solve this problem, so that these difficulties are behind us. He spoke well, because he is concerned about the vibrancy and dynamism of the Guinean press. But also, he is concerned about professionalism and gave advice on this. We said that no journalist can oppose moving towards professionalism, although the majority of journalists are professionals, even though there may be exceptions as in any other field. But at this level, there is fundamental work that we can do together when the climate is calmer. But in a troubled climate, it is very difficult to do work that can bear fruit,” concluded the Secretary General of the UMGP.
