The trade unionist and teacher Caroline Baya won the 3rd prize (ex aequo) in an amateur writing competition organized as part of the first book fair in Plouguin, Finistère, France, with the theme “Moi(s) j’écris” (I write) for her text “Un amour inoubliable” (An unforgettable love). The award ceremony took place last month, in absentia.
“I learned the news on March 8, the day of Women’s Day. I was over the moon, but also sad that I couldn’t be in Brittany for the awards ceremony,” said Caroline Baya to Le Mauricien, in her second participation in an international competition. Last year, she was a finalist in the René Depestre competition for her first novel, “D’un cœur à l’autre” (From One Heart to Another). Caroline Baya was one of the 21 participants in the adult category at the Plouguin competition. The 1st prize went to Yvon Toscer, and the 2nd to Baptiste Dolou. Caroline Baya shared the 3rd prize ex aequo with Pascal Jaufeon.
Marie Guillory, from the association Les livres de nos moulins, the organizer of the amateur writing competition and book fair, stated to Le Mauricien that “the fair was a huge success, with 295 visitors in one day.” According to her, many people also showed interest in the competition with “45 requests for rules” for the three categories (adult, child, and family).
The text discusses an exchange between a young girl and her mother about “true love,” as highlighted by our interlocutor. “The mother then decides to talk to her about her own experience,” she continues. The author wanted to emphasize what she considers important in life: “Religion, family, and social status should not separate those who love each other. We must always strive for love to triumph.” Caroline Baya said she wrote her text in one go in a few days.
