Indian President, Droupadi Murmu, praised the empowerment through education. This was during a ceremony held in her honor yesterday at the Octave Wiehe auditorium by the University of Mauritius to confer upon her the title of Doctor Honoris Causa.
“In view of the strong ties between the people that form the foundation of the unique friendship between India and Mauritius, I believe that the future of our bilateral relations lies in the youth, which underscores the importance of education in leading towards this goal,” she said in her address. She warmly thanked Mauritius for the warm welcome and the honor of receiving this title, while emphasizing “the enduring strength of the relations between India and Mauritius and the close ties between the two peoples.”
She argues that education remains a tool for transformation, drawing on her own life journey to illustrate its profound impact on individuals and society. Referring to her experiences, the Indian President reflected on the power of education, noting its ability to spark a flame in young minds and provoke significant changes. She speaks of education as a powerful weapon that lifts people from vulnerability to opportunities and hope, impacting not only individuals but also families, villages, and society as a whole. Droupadi Murmu encouraged all young people, especially women, to pursue their passions and dreams, positioning universities, like the University of Mauritius, as catalysts for personal and societal growth.
The Chief Guest reviewed India’s commitment to Mauritius through various educational programs, including the Indian program of technical and economic cooperation and scholarships, which have significantly contributed to the development of Mauritian society. She urged Mauritians to take advantage of their special proximity to India to create economic opportunities, particularly as a valued maritime neighbor and key partner in the Indian Ocean region.
She also expressed hope for a deepening of the partnership between Mauritian and Indian youth, envisioning a future of progress and prosperity for both nations.
Droupadi Murmu received her honorary doctorate from the Chancellor of the University of Mauritius, Jean Claude Autrey.
