A second casino is expected to open on the main road of Triolet, where there are shops, as well as religious institutions such as Madrassas and Maktabs.
This project is not universally welcomed by some residents of Triolet, who are concerned about the social and economic impact that a gambling house could have in this location.
The opening of this casino is causing controversy in the village. Just before the Maha Shivaratree festival, rumors about this project had surfaced, leading to outrage among the residents of the area.
A notice posted on a building at 8th Mile, which was removed after Facebook posts contested the project, only fueled the rumors.
“We do not need a casino in Triolet,” criticize some locals.
The chosen location for this project is considered inappropriate because the social and cultural activities that take place daily in the area will be disrupted, explains a resident of the locality.
For some, the association of drugs, alcohol, and prostitution with casinos will only degrade the image of the region and create social problems.
Approached by a local merchant, who highlighted the ongoing issue of traffic jams in Triolet, he explained that the situation will not improve.
“Why not organize parking instead? People in Triolet are suffering from this. This is causing congestion in the streets,” he said.
A mother living in the region said she does not understand how the authorities support projects such as Gambling Houses and casinos, given all the social problems that Mauritians face.
“If ten jobs are created, a hundred people will go gamble there,” responded a mechanic working in the area when asked about the potential job creation that this project could bring.
A protest march will be organized on Thursday, March 21 at 4 pm from the Village Hall in the locality, initiated by a group of residents. A petition against this project will be sent to the Prime Minister’s office.
