Raymond Julius Spéville, born on March 13, 1924, celebrated his 100th birthday last Saturday at his residence in Belle-Etoile, Coromandel.
To mark this occasion, the centenarian received a check for Rs 26,203, a bouquet, a centenarian medal, a certificate, a Samsung mobile phone, a special telephone service offered by Mauritius Telecom, a gift from the Senior Citizen Council, and a Rs 10,000 check from the National Solidarity Fund.
Raymond Julius Spéville, an only child, was born in Jouvence. His father was a stone cutter and his mother was a midwife. The centenarian attended the public school in Congomah until Standard I and worked as a tailor before becoming an electrician at the Port Louis municipal council until his retirement.
He married and the couple has three children, two daughters who live in France, and a son who lives with them. His 86-year-old wife is in good health.
The centenarian does not have any major health problems except for slight hearing impairment. He uses a walking cane to get around.
Raymond Julius Spéville attributes his longevity to his faith in God and a healthy lifestyle. He eats both vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals, has never smoked or consumed alcoholic beverages.
