Cases of fatal assaults have been numerous since the beginning of the year. Eight victims have met a gruesome end since January, including three just this week.
Shortly after the New Year festivities, on the night of January 5th, Abel Danilo Joyeux, 27, was rushed to Victoria Hospital after being assaulted on Prince Charles Avenue in Camp-Levieux.
The death of this NHDC resident was confirmed shortly after his arrival at the hospital.
The young man had been attacked with a sword by a group of individuals. The autopsy performed by Dr. Sudesh Kumar Gungadin, the head of the forensic department, attributed the death to exsanguination “due to chop wound to the right foot.”
Four suspects have been arrested in connection with this case.
On February 14th, while in the company of a friend, Joseph Miguel Augustin was assaulted by one of his neighbors.
After receiving blows, the victim was taken back to his home in Pont Bruniquel, Baie-du-Tombeau, where he was placed in bed.
Taken to the hospital, the thirty-year-old succumbed over the weekend. The autopsy determined that Joseph Miguel Augustin died from intracranial injuries.
Police suspect that the victim’s head hit the ground during the altercation. His neighbor has been arrested.
Stabbed by his partner, Frederick Natian passed away on February 17th. During a violent dispute, this 50-year-old resident of Diole, Vacoas, received multiple stab wounds.
The fifty-year-old had already passed away by the time the police arrived on the scene and had about fifteen injuries to the abdomen, face, and neck.
His partner was arrested and a provisional charge was made against her.
On the night of Monday, March 4th, Sameer Jugurnauth, a 49-year-old inmate, died at Nehru Hospital, where he had been admitted the day before after an assault at the New Wing of the Beau-Bassin prison.
The three cellmates of the inmate are suspected of being involved in this murder, including Constable Hans Gaungoo, who is in custody for a drug trafficking case.
Sameer Jugurnauth was beaten before being left naked on his mattress.
On March 7th, the lifeless body of Gérard Tuyau was found in an alley leading to his home. The autopsy attributed the death of the 63-year-old victim to a ruptured spleen.
Gérard Tuyau’s two sons and one of their partners were questioned. The police suspect that the retiree was assaulted by his sons in front of one of their partners.
Tooland Ujoodha, 51, was killed outside his home in Trois-Boutiques on the evening of Thursday, March 14th.
The victim was allegedly attacked with a sharp weapon by a group of individuals, in front of his mother.
Several arrests have been made in connection with this case. A neighborhood problem is believed to be the cause of the assault.
Joseph Thierry Edouard, 37, succumbed to a cerebral edema on Monday, March 18th. This resident of Roche-Bois had been admitted to Jeetoo Hospital the day before following an assault.
One of the suspects, arrested in connection with this investigation, claims that the victim was insulting them and was violent. The young man also said that he slapped Thierry Edouard twice, causing him to lose balance and fall.
Damien Latire, 21, is the latest victim of assault. The young man succumbed to his injuries on March 18th after being assaulted in Cité-Mangalkhan on Sunday.
The police arrested the singer Lion Vibe, whose real name is Kensley Steward Assaun.
The 21-year-old suspect allegedly stabbed his victim four times over a money dispute.
