The African Leadership College (ALC) once again rolled out the red carpet for its graduation ceremony, with special guests including the Vice-Prime Minister of Mauritius and Minister of Education, Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun, and Julie Gichuru, Head of Public Affairs and Communications at the Mastercard Foundation.
The event took place yesterday at the Trianon Convention Centre, where more than 50 students received their diplomas in programs such as social sciences, business management, engineering, and computer science. This ceremony provided a valuable opportunity for students and graduates to learn from one of Africa’s most inspiring female leaders.
Passionate about Afro-optimism, Julie Gichuru oversees corporate communications, programmatic initiatives, policies, and leadership at the Mastercard Foundation with the help of her team in Africa and Canada. Prior to joining the Foundation, Julie spent two decades in broadcasting, print media, digital media, and communication for development.
Early in her career, she spearheaded programming and investigative journalism for television. She also created and launched several leading news and current affairs programs, while developing the pan-African television show, Africa Leadership Dialogues.
In 2008, Julie Gichuru became the first woman to receive the Martin Luther King Salute to Greatness award for her repeated calls for non-violent action following the 2007 elections in Kenya. Over the past decade, she has worked closely with key institutions such as the World Bank Group, the African Development Bank, various UN agencies, and the World Economic Forum. In 2019, she was recognized as one of the 100 most influential African women by Avance Media and was also ranked among the 100 most influential Africans by New African magazine.
