Mauritian authorities suspect a cholera epidemic on board the Norvegian Dawn cruise ship. Currently, the cruise ship is off the coast of Port-Louis.
This morning, health authorities went on board to take blood tests from about fifteen passengers. It will take at least 48 hours to receive the results, according to the Ministry of Health.
They claim to be closely monitoring this case.
It should be noted that this cruise ship started its journey from Cape Town in South Africa before making a stop in Madagascar. It was supposed to head to Reunion Island. However, according to the news site Réunion la Première, the prefecture refused it to dock. It was then supposed to dock in Mauritius today, but arrived earlier, at 18:00 yesterday after being rejected in Reunion Island.
The ‘Norwegian Dawn’ has 2184 passengers and 1026 crew members. Around 2,000 passengers have finished their cruise by disembarking in Mauritius this morning. It was planned for 2,279 new passengers to board the ship today in Port-Louis.
Since the test results will only be known in about 48 hours, the passengers who were supposed to board the ‘Norwegian Dawn’ and start their cruise from Mauritius today will not be able to do so due to potential health risks.
They will have to be accommodated in available hotel establishments.
For now, Mauritian authorities say they are waiting for the results of the analysis in order to determine the next steps.
This letter was sent to passengers on board, and every effort is being made to facilitate communication between passengers and their travel agency, as well as their loved ones.
