The member of parliament for Mahébourg/Plaine Magnien (No.12), Richard Duval, slammed the door of the party by submitting his resignation letter to PMSD leader Xavier-Luc Duval yesterday morning. He expressed deep regret for being in the position of a party resignee.

“I am deeply wounded, as a certain level of mistrust has developed within the party in recent weeks. Furthermore, the information surrounding a possible rapprochement with the MSM goes against my principles, the same principles that led you to leave the government in 2016. I want to be able to look my constituents and all other Mauritians in the eye, and tell them that I have chosen the country above all,” he wrote to PMSD leader Xavier-Luc Duval.

Richard Duval mentioned a phrase that struck him since Sunday, which was “sa 2 la pankor donn zot let demision,” which was the final straw that broke the camel’s back, he explained. “I am terribly hurt, I ask for your forgiveness if I tried to sort things out within the alliance for the PMSD (the party of our father Sir Gaetan), and it did not please you,” he said, stating that this political decision did not in any way affect their family relationship.

Rouben Mooroongapillay: “Obligation to distance oneself from the PMSD”
Lawyer Rouben Mooroongapillay also distanced himself from the PMSD yesterday by submitting his resignation letter to Xavier-Luc Duval. In his correspondence to the leader of the party, he made it clear that he was obligated to distance himself from the party for obvious reasons.

“Politics is not just about tickets, but rather about values, honesty, and ideologies. Sincerity and humility are equally important, and we must not mislead our constituents and supporters. I prefer to remain true to these fundamental values and principles,” emphasized the lawyer. He mentioned that he had fought within the Avengers and participated as a guest at a Reform Party gathering, but had never joined or adhered to another party and now prefers to engage elsewhere.

Kushal Lobine: “The strong credential you have acquired since 2017 is priceless”
In his resignation letter to PMSD leader Xavier-Luc Duval, former party spokesperson Kushal Lobine reminded his ex-leader that it was his refusal to approve the introduction of the Prosecution Commission Bill in 2017, a Landmark Political Decision, that earned him “this strong credential to position yourself as a respected parliamentarian and a much applauded and competent leader of the Opposition.” He hoped that in the near future, Xavier-Luc Duval would not compromise “the strong credential that you have acquired since 2017 up to now and which (…) is priceless.”

Kushal Lobine stated that it was only after complete introspection and consultations with his constituents that he took the pen to inform him of his decision. “It is with a heavy heart that I have taken such a decision, but as it stands, our political journey together within the PMSD has come to an end today. My constituents have overwhelmingly urged me to do my best for the PMSD to stay within the Alliance with the PTR and MMM. But unfortunately, I have not been successful in doing so, despite my several attempts to explain to you and the members of the PMSD about the expectations of the people at large,” he said.

While he acknowledged that Xavier-Luc Duval had been attentive to his point of view and that they were on the same wavelength regarding their political beliefs and principles, in recent days, however, he wrote: “I have felt and witnessed a change of position regarding the party’s political agenda. Instead of working with our opposition allies to prepare and finalize the political manifesto, which was our paramount task and commitment (a committee that you chaired and I was together with other members from the PTR and MMM), I was surprised to see that the Party embarked on a method of ticket bargaining with our allies, done in public through the press, by people who, to my knowledge, were not mandated by the party.” This led him to express his dissatisfaction with the handling of the situation, the consequences of which are known today.

Despite the situation, the resignee affirmed that he would always value the friendship beyond political agendas and “as a friend of yours, I do not have any hard feelings.” As for his political future, he described it as follows: “I shall move on and embark on a new political journey. Many people from civil society and other political parties, including the PMSD, have expressed the wish for the establishment of a new political platform with democracy, the commitment to support major constitutional reforms, an ecology-driven economy, a new political mindset, and putting innovation and meritocracy at the forefront as key indicators for a new Ocean State of Mauritius. God willing, I shall give my best to live up to that expectation.”
