The Board of Directors of Air Mauritius issued a statement to its staff yesterday, announcing the termination of the employment contract of its Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Kresimir Kucko, without mentioning him by name. This decision stems from a mutual compromise agreement under the provisions of the Workers Rights Act, effective at the end of February, which means the day before yesterday.
On September 15, 2023, the airline had suspended CEO Kresimir Kucko and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Jean Laval Ah Chip, following an emergency meeting. This suspension was decided in light of troubling information brought to the attention of the board.
At that time, Air Mauritius’ statement emphasized that this decision was made with respect to transparency and integrity. During the suspension period, Captain Alain Leung Hing Wah assumed the role of Accountable Manager, Laurent Recoura as Officer in Charge, and Shivaji Gunnesh temporarily as Financial Officer. These temporary measures were pending the conclusions of the investigation entrusted to the accounting firm Price Waterhouse Coopers. The management said it was acting in the interest of transparency and fairness in this delicate situation.
The latest brief statement from the Air Mauritius board contradicts its original commitments to shed light on the matter and demonstrate transparency. The current statement does not mention the conclusions of Price Waterhouse Coopers’ investigation to determine the validity of the allegations. As of yesterday afternoon, there was no indication of the fate of the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) either. There is also no mention of whether this agreement is accompanied by a Golden Handshake for the ousted CEO.
Air Mauritius is now a subsidiary of Airports Holding Ltd, with Raouf Gulbul as Chairman and Ken Arian as CEO, who must inform the public about the agreements between MK and its former CEO. The acting CEO, Laurent Recoura, has not hidden his ambitions for the CEO position.
