The political situation in Rodrigues has been going through a rough patch since the transition in the functions of chief commissioner at the Regional Assembly of Rodrigues. The presentation of the Rodrigues budget tomorrow by the new chief commissioner, Franceau Grandcourt, will confirm if the thin majority of the regional government is still in place.

Indeed, the new No 2 of the Executive Council and former chief commissioner, Johnson Roussety, announced that he will not vote for the Rodrigues budget for the 2024/25 fiscal year. Christian Agathe has also indicated that he aligns with his leader on this matter.

This announcement was made yesterday afternoon by Johnson Roussety during a meeting of the FPRe in Baie-aux-Huîtres. He argues that this step follows the reallocation of portfolios within the Executive Council of the Regional Assembly of Rodrigues. He protests against the fact that he was not informed by Franceau Grandcourt of the reasons why he was stripped of the commissions for Infrastructure, Housing, and Environment.

With the regional government being put in the minority on the budget, given the balance of power within the Regional Assembly, the next political move of the Rodrigues People’s Organisation (OPR) is being closely watched two years after the last elections on the island.

In any case, the Executive Council meeting tomorrow on the budget and the Regional Assembly meeting are shaping up to be crucial for Chief Commissioner Grandcourt in search of a majority.
