The eco-socialist party Rezistans Ek Alternativ (ReA) held a press conference yesterday in Moka. The party spokespersons Ashok Subron and David Sauvage addressed several current topics, including the organization of the first constitutional conference by ReA next Saturday at Unity House.

During the ReA press briefing, Ashok Subron talked about the party’s proposals for the upcoming elections. David Sauvage, on the other hand, laid the groundwork for the constitutional conference to be held on March 30 with members of the parliamentary and non-parliamentary opposition on Constitution reform. “The elections have a dual objective this year, on one hand to change a regime that has been in power for 10 years and on the other hand to change the system in which Mauritius has operated since gaining independence,” declared Ashok Subron.

ReA advocates for a non-communal, inclusive system that “expands rights and citizen participation in society.” ReA also proposes a new government to facilitate the transition, with the creation of an extra-parliamentary unitary front, “otherwise if this does not work, ReA will move towards the creation of a unitary front with like-minded individuals.” Ashok Subron also stated that the main task of this transitional government would be to bring about constitutional changes for two years. “After these two years, Parliament will be dissolved.” Ashok Subron also affirmed that “we will field candidates while continuing our fight, but the details will be announced in due time.” Other topics were also discussed, including the “criminalization of political opposition” and the “attempts towards absolute control of the police in prosecution.”

In conclusion, the press conference by Rezistans ek Alternativ highlighted the party’s stance on upcoming elections, the need for constitutional reform, and the push for a more inclusive and participatory system in Mauritius. The party’s proposed strategies for transitioning to a new government and bringing about constitutional changes were also outlined, emphasizing the importance of citizen engagement and democratic values in the political process.
