The eco-socialist party Rezistans ek Alternativ (ReA) held a press conference yesterday in Moka, a week after the first constitutional conference where several opposition parties were invited. The spokespersons of ReA, David Sauvage, Ashwin Gudday, and Stefan Gua, touched on various current topics.
“The next meeting will be on Saturday, April 13, where it will be the turn of civil society to discuss and give their point of view on the issues discussed last week,” explained Stefan Gua. He summarized the highlights of the gathering at Unity House, mentioning that a report is currently being prepared. “This report will be submitted to political parties,” he said. Additionally, he recalled the objectives of these discussions, including “listening to what political parties had to say about the constitutional amendments they would like to see and how to achieve them.”
Stefan Gua also emphasized the importance of such discussions “to ensure that the current government is not re-elected and to understand that it is not just a change of regime that is needed but primarily a change of system.”
David Sauvage, on the other hand, reviewed the discussions on the Disability Bill, which he described as “pathetic.” According to him, the new bill is “like a greenwash on an outdated system, approaching elections.” He believes that the bill only contains empty promises without truly addressing the real climate and environmental issues in the country. Ashwin Gudday also commented on the Disability Bill, which the party believes is “long overdue.”
In summary, Rezistans ek Alternativ’s press conference addressed the recent constitutional conference, the importance of discussions in shaping the political landscape, and criticism of the Disability Bill for not adequately addressing environmental concerns. The party reiterated the need for a systemic change in addition to a change of government. They highlighted the role of civil society in contributing to these discussions, ensuring accountability, and striving for a better future for Mauritius.
