The Information and Communication Technologies Authority (ICTA) has provided laptops to the Century Welfare Association, which supports the education of children with special educational needs in Mauritius.
“The technology is important for the development of every child, regardless of their abilities. These children must have the same opportunities to succeed in life,” said Anwar Husnoo, Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Regional Administrations, during a ceremony at the association’s headquarters in Plaine-Verte.
Anwar Husnoo believes that technology improves social inclusion and that “every child has the same status of equality, which should promote their holistic development.” He adds that “disability can in no way be a weakness.” He also mentioned the success of two young disabled individuals, Ahnas Abdool Careem and Afraz Nundoo, who ranked 9th (Economics) and 15th (Arts) in the HSC exams this year. “These are exemplary children who have shown extraordinary strength to succeed. These examples demonstrate that with the necessary support, a child with special needs can succeed,” he pointed out.
Dick Ng Sui Wa, Chairman of ICTA, praised the work of parents of young disabled individuals. He mentioned that ICTA has made donations of computer equipment to other associations such as the Père Laval Association, SOS Village Bambous, the Chagos Refugees Group, and the Mauritius Islamic Mission. “ICTA aims to support these children in their educational journey,” he said.
Salim Abbas Mamode, a member of the majority party, and the Mayor, Isoop Nujuraully, also emphasized the importance of technology in children’s education.
Fouad Uteene, President of the Century Welfare Association, discussed the various activities carried out by the association, such as therapies for disabled individuals, financial assistance for medical services, a Food Programme for the needy, scholarships for students, and courses for young people.
