Born on March 7, 1924, Habeebuh Sakeechane celebrated her 100th birthday on Friday at the Inoos Hafez Hall in Phoenix. Present at the event were the Minister of Social Integration, Social Security, and National Solidarity, Fazila Jeewa-Daureeawoo, the Private Parliamentary Secretary Ismaël Rawoo, and other dignitaries.
The new centenarian received a check for Rs 26,203, a bouquet of flowers, a centenarian medal, a certificate, a set of cooking pots, a special phone service offered by Mauritius Telecom, a gift from the Senior Citizen Council, and a Rs 10,000 check from the National Solidarity Fund.
Habeebuh Sakeechane was born in Solferino, Vacoas, to a humble family. Her father was a laborer and her mother a housewife. Her brother has passed away, but she still has her younger sister. Although she only attended school until Std II, she has always been active, whether as a homemaker or raising livestock on her own, which she did until the age of 95.
The new centenarian was religiously married to Issac Mowlabaccus, a truck driver who passed away in November 1976 at the age of 56. They had two daughters and a son. Since then, the family has grown, and Habeebuh Sakeechane now has five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Fortunately, she does not suffer from any major health issues and is able to move around independently with the help of a walker. She attributes her longevity to her faith in God and her strong work ethic. To this day, she is still considered the head of the family.
