The increase in the old-age pension to Rs 13,500 is a “monetary illusion,” according to Xavier-Luc Duval. The leader of the opposition expressed this view during a press conference of the alliance PTr/MMM/PMSD on Saturday, March 16.
The three parties agree on the same point. Although the electoral promise made by Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth in October 2019 is now a reality, it has “no value.”
Due to the high cost of living, the Rs 13,500 old-age pension will not be enough to meet the needs of the elderly, explained XLD.
Navin Ramgoolam took the opportunity to remind that during the last five years, pensioners have not received any compensation. “Or Rs 13,500 that he is giving you? It no longer has value, it is worth Rs 10,500,” said the leader of the PTr, pointing out that some people are being deceived.
The prices of medicines, electricity, and fruits have risen, leading to a decrease in purchasing power, said the former Prime Minister.
“He (Referring to Pravind Jugnauth) gives you a dime, he takes a bull,” warned Navin Ramgoolam.
Taking the floor, Paul Bérenger also emphasized that the increase in pension to Rs 13,500 is just an illusion.
