Rezistans ek Alternativ (ReA) held a press conference in Moka on Saturday with two main topics: what this ecosocialist party proposes for the upcoming general elections and the constitutional conference on March 30th. Addressing the first theme, Ashok Subron, spokesperson of the party, highlighted that the upcoming elections have a dual objective: to change the current regime after ten years in power and to amend the system in which the country has been operating since 1968.

“The goal is to transition from our current system to one that is more inclusive, non-communal, and advocates for citizen participation in society,” he stated. He proposes the establishment of a new government that would be able to move forward with constitutional reform.

“Ideally, we need a government with a three-quarters majority in Parliament. That’s why the party suggests the formation of a coalition of parliamentary and extraparliamentary opposition parties, citizen organizations, and workers,” he added.

“If this coalition fails to materialize, Rezistans ek Alternativ will then work on another one that will bring together citizens who are in favor of constitutional reform, and in the future there will be a three-cornered fight in the next general elections. Since Rezistans ek Alternativ does not operate like traditional political parties, we will align our candidates,” he warned.

Ashok Subron also reiterated that regardless of the future political configuration, he will continue the legal battle against communal classification during elections. “We will continue with this fight that has been ongoing for at least eighteen years. We triggered a constitutional amendment in 2014 after the United Nations declared that rejecting a candidate is a violation of human rights. It is now clear that Pravind Jugnauth will not come with a constitutional amendment in this direction,” he insisted.

Speaking about the conflict between the DPP and the Commissioner of Police, Ashok Subron stated that this situation stems from the public release of the judicial investigation report into the death of the chief MSM agent in Quartier-Militaire/Moka (No 8), Soopramanien Kistnen.

David Sauvage, on the other hand, laid the groundwork for the constitutional conference scheduled for March 30th at Unity House with members of parliamentary and extraparliamentary opposition on Constitution reform.

This conference will be led by Nalini Burn, an Independent Consultant and Researcher, and former DPP, Me Satyajit Boolell, Senior Counsel. There will also be interaction with members of the public. Nine political parties have been invited to participate in this conference.
