The President of the Republic of India, Droupadi Murmu, left the country yesterday afternoon after a forty-eight-hour visit to Mauritius as the Chief Guest at the national celebrations marking the 56th anniversary of independence and the 32nd of the republic. She was accompanied to the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport by Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth and his wife, Kobita Jugnauth, as well as a ministerial delegation and other dignitaries.
Before heading to the airport, Droupadi Murmu visited Grand Bassin despite heavy rain to offer prayers at Mangalmurti Mahadev and perform an aarti in front of the sacred lake. In her speech at the banquet held in her honor, she confirmed that the Indian government will support Mauritius in converting Ganga Talao into a spiritual park and making it a cultural and tourist center. This initiative by the Indian authorities aims to deepen people-to-people relations.
The final day of Droupadi Murmu’s State Visit began with a visit to the iconic Aapravasi Ghat, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Mauritius, where she paid tribute to the girmityas. For her, this place symbolizes the resilience of over half a million Indian indentured workers who migrated to Mauritius in the 19th and 20th centuries and serves as a source of inspiration.
She also visited the Museum of Intercontinental Slavery.
The museum commemorates the contributions of African, Malagasy, and Asian slaves to the Mauritian economy. It serves as a powerful reminder of slavery and exploitation, reinforcing everyone’s commitment to creating a just society.
During her visit, the President of India also announced that Mauritians of Indian origin up to the 7th generation are eligible to obtain an OCI Card.
