More than 80 days have passed since Cyclone Belal and the devastating downpour shook the country. While very few houses were affected by the heavy floods in Coromandel, the cyclone greatly impacted the streets of the Chapman View subdivision, leaving a landscape of devastation in its wake. The impressive images that flooded social media reflect the destructive power of nature. Under the weight of the water, the peaceful streets of Chapman View were transformed into true craters, plunging residents into dismay. “We thought that the authorities would get down to repairs as soon as possible,” said one resident. However, the streets still look like minefields.
The MP for constituency No. 20 (Beau-Bassin/Petite-Rivière), Karen Foo Kune, took up the issue on Tuesday in the National Assembly, questioning the Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Local Government and Disaster and Risk Management, Anwar Husnoo, who stated that “given the considerable damage observed on the streets of the Chapman View subdivision, a complete repair of the streets will be necessary. The cost estimate for the reconstruction of the five roads which were extremely damaged is Rs 20 million. Financial clearance has already been obtained for the work.” However, motorists who frequently use these routes will have to be patient, as in response to a further question from Karen Foo Kune, the Minister stated that a tender to appoint the contractor responsible for the repairs was launched on March 1st and the received offers are currently being evaluated.
