A weather bulletin issued today by the Vacoas station at 5:30 PM predicts severe weather conditions for Mauritius in the coming days, due to convective activity associated with the monsoon prevailing between Agalega and Diego Garcia.
A weak low-pressure system, currently east of Agalega, is expected to move initially southeast and then veer southwest from Thursday the 29th towards Madagascar from Friday, March 1st.
As it transits north of the Mascarene Islands, the low-pressure system is expected to intensify from March 1st, located approximately 750 km north-northwest of Rodrigues. Weather models agree that the system could develop into a tropical storm as it approaches the east coast of the Malagasy Republic.
As the low-pressure system moves southwest, it will extend a disturbance zone towards the Mascarene Islands, causing significant showers and thunderstorms in St Brandon, Rodrigues, and Mauritius, especially over the weekend.
The combined effect of the low-pressure system and a high-pressure system south of the Mascarene Islands will maintain windy conditions over the Mascarene Islands throughout the weekend.
