On the occasion of International Women’s Day, observed on March 8, Rezistans ek Alternativ issued seven demands for a more egalitarian society. From the official recognition of Anna de Bengale’s rebellion act under the Dutch era to protection against violence, the leftist party urges the State to react for better recognition, integration, and respect for women in society.

Rezistans ek Alternativ (ReA) first recalls that Mauritius’ history has been marked by women’s struggle at different periods. The act of rebellion of Anna de Bengale – who set fire to the Dutch barracks in Vieux-Grand-Port – the assassination of Anjalay Coopen during the workers’ revolt under colonization, and the participation of thousands of schoolgirls in the May 75 students’ march are cited as significant events. “The first International Women’s Day was observed in Mauritius in 1978, following the May 75 movement. It was only much later that the State officially recognized this day,” specify Danny Marie and Veena Dholah.

For Women’s Day 2024, ReA presents seven demands. Firstly, the official recognition of Anna de Bengale’s rebellion act. “It is important to emphasize that slaves did not have ‘gender roles’. It is therefore important to celebrate their courage.” An amendment to the constitution allowing women to decide on everything related to their bodies is also demanded. Likewise, a recognition of parity principles within the State and public institutions.

The party also calls for electoral reform to encourage women’s participation in politics. The introduction of a proportional representation enabling 50% of female candidates is suggested. That is, one woman per party/alliance in each constituency.

ReA advocates for the recognition of the social reproduction responsibility at work. This translates into a 12-day parental leave, allowing for school follow-up, medical care, and other responsibilities related to children; a “paid menstrual leave,” as well as the provision of “sanitary bins” at workplaces.

The party also asks the State to align with international protocols, including that of SADC, applying the legal age of marriage to 18 years. That is, the age of majority. Lastly, the State is urged to make commitments to protect women against violence/femicide.

On this occasion, ReA expresses its solidarity with the international movement for women’s reproductive rights, for world peace and the liberation of Palestine, as well as all oppressed peoples on the planet.
