Solidarité Morisyin Ar Lepep Palestinn (Somalp) and Lalit are organizing a peaceful march this Saturday at 1:30 pm in Rose-Hill in support of the liberation of Palestine. Participants will meet near the town market, close to the stadium. “We will then walk in the city center of Rose-Hill. The necessary steps with the relevant authorities have already been taken,” they explain.

Somalp and Lalit have, since the beginning of the conflict between Israel and Gaza on October 7, 2023, initiated a series of actions, meetings, demonstrations, and clear positions in support of the Palestinians oppressed by the regime led by Benyamin Netanyahu. “For several weeks and months now, we have witnessed nothing short of a blatant genocide! Several actions have been taken on the international level by important instances and organizations demanding that Israel cease its atrocities against the Palestinian people. But in vain: Israel continues its horrors on the Palestinians!” they highlight.

In over seven months, this conflict has resulted in more than 33,137 deaths, according to the latest figures as of mid-week, including over 13,000 children. As the two entities state: “This slaughter is becoming more important than ever! Despite the provisional judgment of the ICJ against Israel, the United Nations Security Council resolution for an immediate ceasefire, not to mention the damning document ‘Anatomy of a Genocide’ by the UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese, submitted to the Human Rights Council of this body, Israel still persists in bombing Gaza neighborhoods, killing civilians, women, children, elderly people, as well as men.”

The joint front of Lalit/Somalp elaborates: “Israel is imposing famine on the Palestinians, which is unbearable. They commit such crimes with the support of the United States, this country providing them with weapons, money, and diplomatic support to massacre this oppressed people. All of this is revolting! Especially considering that Israel’s military occupation of Palestinian land is illegal.”

The organizers continue: “Each action, including Saturday’s march, weighs in to compel Israel to stop its barbarity, and for the United States to stop supporting them.” Lalit and Somalp urge “all Mauritians, from all communities, to join us” before reminding: “Around the world, it is anonymous individuals and citizens of all backgrounds, like us, who demonstrate and defend the people of Palestine. Every presence is important!”

The procedures for holding this march with the relevant authorities, starting with the police, have already been followed. “Our action this Saturday has as its primary motivation to immediately stop this genocide! In the same vein, and in line with the campaign we have started, we once again ask the Mauritian government to join the action initiated by South Africa to denounce the ongoing genocide at the ICJ.”

Lalit and Somalp also aim to intensify actions, “such as the boycott campaign, disinvestment of national capital in companies operated by Israel, clear and concrete sanctions against this state.” A global economic break, if taken on an international basis, these organizers believe, “will provoke an urgent and necessary ceasefire, thus saving the lives of many innocent children, women, and people living in Gaza in inhumane conditions.”

Lalit and Somalp demand “a global embargo to block all arms traffic to Israel. Americans, British, and Germans should no longer supply weapons to the Israeli army. The same goes for financing and diplomatic support. Mauritius must sever its ties with this country as long as it does not stop this genocide. We must not be complicit in this slaughter.”

The organizers add: “For years, Lalit and Somalp have been denouncing the apartheid system that Israel has imposed on the Palestinians. Israel’s military occupation in the West Bank, which also includes East Jerusalem, has been going on for 56 years. As a reminder, Mauritius has already spoken out against this situation at the ICJ.” Once again, Lalit and Somalp demand “the closure of the military base in Diego Garcia.”
