It is difficult to imagine a “Manhattan-style” development when a simple mechanical failure causes a multitude of inconveniences.

At the Vacoas Municipal Complex, a building located in the heart of the city and housing several branches of government services, the only available elevator has been out of service for several weeks.

As a result, elderly people or those with disabilities struggle to reach the offices of the Ministry of Labour or the civil status offices located on the 2nd floor.

An escalator provides access to the first level. Subsequently, a somewhat gloomy staircase must be taken.

This situation has been reported several times, without the necessary steps being taken to permanently restore the functionality of the elevator.

For the time being, a simple sheet of paper, stuck to the elevator door, indicates that it is out of order.

While waiting for the relevant authorities to take action, the residents of Vacoas must arm themselves with patience.

In the budding Manhattan, decrepitude is setting in among the projects and promises of “development.”
