The famous retort “to konn mwa twa” (translated as “You know me, I know you”) is at the center of an alleged act of intimidation by a close associate of the ruling party towards a police officer. Irvin Collendavelloo, son of the leader of the Muvman Liberater, was stopped in his white Renault Megane car by a police officer conducting a routine check in Port-Louis.
While checking the young lawyer’s car, the constable noted that the windshield and windows were tinted, which is a violation. In response to the officer’s routine questions before issuing a ticket, the lawyer reportedly said: “You know me, you know me? I am Ivan Collendavelloo’s son. I will not pay this fine. I have never paid a fine. We will meet in court. The magistrates are on my side!”
The officer handed him a Fixed Penalty Notice to settle the fine at the Port-Louis court by April 16. The driver allegedly threatened the police officer in a menacing tone, saying, “Get ready for a transfer soon.”
The police officer officially reported the incident as soon as he returned to the police station on the same day.
